Installation
Can I use the SCALE-RT Linux distribution without installing the SCALE-RT Windows software?
Yes, you can.
What user name and password should I use for SCALE-RT Linux?
Login as root with the password targetroot.
How many computers do I need in order to run SCALE-RT?
To use the full functionality of the SCALE-RT software, you need two PC-compatible computers. However, the Linux system can be used completely standalone on just one PC.
Do I need a network between the host and target computer?
Yes, you do if you want to use the full functionality. Building up a network between computers is nowadays very intuitive. SCALE-RT supports all standard Ethernet connections. Please note: When connecting two PCs directly, then you need a 'crossed' Ethernet cable!
Can I use the Linux system in an embedded environment?
Absolutely ! - as long as you have a CD drive and your system complies with the minimum system requirements as defined in the system specification
Do I need to re-install SCALE-RT if I move to the licensed version?
No, you don't. A simple installation of the license key enables all the features automatically.
If I have downloaded the Linux image, do I need the Linux Live-CD to do a hard-drive installation?
Yes, after downloading you need to burn the CD, boot the target with the Live-CD and install the SW according to procedure.
If I have downloaded the Windows Host-Setup file, do I need to burn an installation CD before installing?
No. You can install directly from the setup file.
Do I have to install Scilab/Scicos on the Windows Host computer?
You don't if you are using another SW modeling package like Matlab®/Simulink®, SimulationX®, etc. Otherwise, we recommend to install it to get the full feature set.
Why are the files for downloading so big?
SCALE-RT is very comprehensive package with a lot of features. The Linux Live-CD target is a complete Linux operating system. The Windows cross-development environment is a professional SW package with all the features you can dream of.
Licensing
Do I need a key to activate the trial version?
No, you don't. The Windows Host Setup will ask during the installation for a license key. However, you just need to tick the 'Trial' box to continue without a license key. The Linux Live-CD can be used right away without any additional tasks.
When do I need to buy a license?
A SCALE-RT license is needed when you want to use external I/O cards on your target. A typical example would be if you have developed an automotive simulation application which wants to read data from a CAN bus card. The CAN bus card is part of your Linux computer and is connected to external devices such as a motor control unit.Or maybe you just want to develop your own house automation system. Add a few I/O card and control your environment by using SCALE-RT. It's fun :-)
How do I buy a license?
Just contact us or buy them online.
I want to upgrade from SCALE-RT concert to SCALE-RT opus. What do I need to do?
You will have to order an upgrade of your license. You will only pay the difference of price between the two versions.
Linux Real-Time Distribution
Can I use the Linux Live-CD on my Windows PC?
Yes, you can boot SCALE-RT's real-time Linux from the Live-CD without affecting your Windows installation.
What version of Debian and Xenomai are you using?
SCALE-RT Version 4.1 contains the following components:
Debian: 4.0r
Kernel: 2.6.20.14-ipipe
Xenomai: 2.3.1
comedi: 0.7.74
Versions of SCALE-RT
Why are there different versions of SCALE-RT? Which one do I need?
The SCALE-RT CDs, or the downloads, support all 3 versions of SCALE-RT. If you are using only the trial version then you get the features of the SCALE-RT opus version (bar the standard limitations of the trial) which is the most comprehensive package. To decide on the right package for you check our SCALE-RT comparison table.
Scilab/Scicos
What is Scilab/Scicos?
It's a model-based SW development environment. It allows software development without actually writing one line of code. It also includes a professional code generator. It is an open-source product, which SCALE-RT has integrated.
SCALE-RT Insight
What is SCALE-RT Insight?
The importance of application-visualization is growing rapidly. This allows the user to display in a graphical way what is happening on the target. It's easy to use, yet flexible.
Simulink Models
P1: Upload of a Simulink model takes a very long time (> 30 sec).
This may happen due to the number of intermediate signals in a large MATLAB Simulink model.
S1: Simulink Model configuration parameters/Real-Time Workshop/RT-Linux code generation: Deactivate "State Interface" and enable "Signal Interface only for testpointed Signals" or disable the signal interface (see figure).
